{"id":524,"date":"2016-04-18T16:45:41","date_gmt":"2016-04-18T16:45:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/pashunconsulting.co.uk\/blog\/?p=524"},"modified":"2024-03-27T15:38:41","modified_gmt":"2024-03-27T15:38:41","slug":"productbacklog","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pashunconsulting.co.uk\/blog\/productbacklog\/","title":{"rendered":"Product Backlog : Example Sports Website"},"content":{"rendered":"As you probably know, every team needs to capture requirements at some point for the product or service they are working on.\n\nIn Agile Scrum we do this using a Product Backlog.\n\nThe Product Backlog is an ordered list of everything that is known to be needed in the product.\n\nBy popular demand, please see below an example\u00a0product backlog. \u00a0This is for a mythical sports website.\n\nIt shows the product vision. \u00a0Then the vision turned into epics, prioritised, estimated and refined for sprint 1.\n\n<span style=\"line-height: 1.5;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/pashunconsulting.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Sports-Website-Vision.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sports Website Vision<\/a><\/span>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong>Notes:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<ul>\n \t<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The overarching vision is captured on the board above.<\/span><\/li>\n \t<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">It clearly states that sports fans of all ages are the intended website users, particularly for the top sports in the world.<\/span><\/li>\n \t<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">It provides three explanations about why the sports fans would like to use the website, the key product features, and the business goal and how the business model might perform in the future.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n \t<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">As you may have noticed, the info on my vision board is concise and coarse-grained. <\/span><\/li>\n \t<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">On one hand, we\u2019re able to understand the new site\u2019s market, value proposition and its business model using the Vision Board above.<\/span><\/li>\n \t<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">On the other hand, due to its many untested assumptions, using the board to develop the product backlog would be quite a risk.<\/span><\/li>\n \t<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">What we need is to point out and validate its assumptions systematically.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/pashunconsulting.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Sports-WebSite-Backlog_1-Epics.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sports WebSite Backlog_1 Epics<\/a>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong><span class=\"s1\">Notes:<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n\n<ul>\n \t<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">the BBC Sports Website has been used as an example here.<\/span><\/li>\n \t<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">There is a Content Management System (CMS) being used to publish content on the site.<\/span><\/li>\n \t<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">all the items are considered epics until they are broken down further.<\/span><\/li>\n \t<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">a lot of the acceptance criteria is vague and not tied down.<\/span><\/li>\n \t<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">a small phrase in caps such as SPORTS HOMEPAGE has been included in the epic title.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>This can later be used to group user stories into a \u2018theme\u2019.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/pashunconsulting.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Sports-WebSite-Backlog_2-Epics-Prioritised.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sports WebSite Backlog_2 Epics Prioritised<\/a>\n\n(<strong>NOTE<\/strong>: Want to learn how to explode your team&#8217;s productivity, get them solving their own issues and get them planned for the day? <a href=\"https:\/\/go.pashunconsulting.co.uk\/lm-daily-team-checklist?utm_source=pashunblog&amp;utm_campaign=blogpost\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Check out the Daily Scrum Checklist<\/a> so you can learn the steps you REALLY need to co-ordinate and communicate with your team every day! \/wp:image -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong><span class=\"s1\">Notes:<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n\n<ul>\n \t<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The Product Owner (PO) has decided that getting the football (soccer) home page done early is of higher value to the business than the other sports because it is the most popular sport in the world according to research.<\/span><\/li>\n \t<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Similarly the Navigation Menu is higher value to get done early, because without it, the site cannot be navigated<\/span><\/li>\n \t<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The other sports home pages are similar to football and therefore should be easier to build after the football page has been completed<\/span><\/li>\n \t<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The PO has decided that the sports pages, navigation, story and video pages form the core of the site and meet the business vision in a worst case scenario.<\/span><\/li>\n \t<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Advertising is important, but revenue is a goal for another release, so the business would launch without it if push came to shove.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>This release is about brand awareness!<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/pashunconsulting.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Sports-WebSite-Backlog_3-Epics-Estimated.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sports WebSite Backlog_3 Epics Estimated<\/a>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong><span class=\"s1\">Notes:<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n\n<ul>\n \t<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Most of the epics have high estimates of 40 or 100.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>This can be because we are in the early stages of the product and criteria is vague.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Also because there is alot to do due to the effort required to build a CMS and a website.<\/span><\/li>\n \t<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The Navigation story is much smaller than the others meaning it is less effort.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>It has been called an epic for now because the team do not know if they can accomplish it in a sprint.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>We will think about that in another product backlog refinement meeting (coming up later in this class).<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<a Sprint 1<\/a>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong><span class=\"s1\">Notes:<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n\n<ul>\n \t<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The stories highlighted in yellow are no longer epics.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>They have been split if necessary and refined to a size that can be completed by the team in one sprint<\/span><\/li>\n \t<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">In this case, the CMS aspect of each story has been separated out into it\u2019s own story.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>This was a team decision.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>However usually I like to keep back-end and front-end tasks in one story where possible for end-to-end testing reasons.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>This is not always easy.<\/span><\/li>\n \t<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Related stories have been grouped using the phrase in caps.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>This is known as a \u201ctheme\u201d.<\/span><\/li>\n \t<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The 20 point stories still may be too large for the team to finish easily in a sprint.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>They may want to break them down further in another refinement meeting.<\/span><\/li>\n \t<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The team now have enough to take at least one or more stories into a sprint planning session.<\/span><\/li>\n \t<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Further backlog refinement meetings can
